Farmers in South Gujarat depend on sugarcane, but are troubled due to low prices. Bharatiya Janata Party has been ruling Gujarat for the last 30 years, but there has been no improvement in the condition of sugarcane farmers.
Giving information, Darshan Nayak (Advocate), farmer and cooperative leader and General Secretary of Gujarat Pradesh Congress and Director of Sion Sugar Mill, said that the farmers of South Gujarat are dependent on sugarcane. The sugar mills here are the lifeline for the farmers. Sugarcane ripening farmers send their sugarcane to sugar mills. Whose prices are announced by Chinese managers.
Today the sugar mills of South Gujarat have declared the price of sugarcane per tonne. Which is more than last year, but not enough for the farmers. The government needs to provide subsidies to provide relief to the farmers. The sugar market has been average due to no increase in the MSP of sugar by the Central Government. Unless the sugar market goes up, sugarcane prices cannot increase.
The sugar export policy and MSP of the central government play an important role in the sugarcane prices, but currently the government has closed the sugar export quota. Not only this, due to the Central Government’s circular to pack sugar in jute sacks, each sugar mill will incur an average cost of production of Rs 18 to 20 per unit. Which has had a direct impact on the price of sugarcane and the increase per ton has been less as compared to last year.
Only coordination between the government and cooperative societies can help farmers. It is a matter of great concern that sugarcane production has reduced in all the sugar mills of South Gujarat. Keeping this in mind when the supply of sugarcane is decreasing, necessary steps should be taken to ensure that farmers can turn to sugarcane crop as much as possible.
