A session on ‘European Textile Trends’ under SGCCI Global Connect Mission 84 of South Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry was organized on 12th March 2024 at 04:30 pm at Samhati, Sarsana, Surat. In which Zia Eleveld, senior expert of Palm Netherlands NGO, gave detailed information about the trends of the textile sector in Europe as well as modern textile machinery.

Nikhil Madrasi, Honorary Minister of the Chamber of Commerce, delivered the welcome address. He said, ‘The Netherlands is India’s largest trading partner in Europe and the fourth largest investor in India in the year 2022-23. Bilateral trade to reach all-time high of US$27 billion in 2022-23. This includes exports of US$21 billion and imports of approximately US$5.961 billion. In the current financial year, US$ 623 million has been exported from India to the Netherlands in the textile sector.

“Currently, the supply chain of disposable clothing in Europe is overstretched,” said Zia Eleeveld, senior expert at Palm Netherlands NGO. Due to which many challenges are being seen in the fashion and textile sector. Such as, preserving the environment, being competitive in local and global markets, increasing efficiency and sustainability. ,

He spoke about the policy program Circular Textiles to make the textile sector 100 percent circular by the year 2050 and said that under this policy, producer responsibility policy has been extended in Europe starting from the year 2023. In which waste management process and recycling is done. By 2025, 25 percent of recycled durable materials and 30 percent of post-consumer materials will be recycled. By 2030, 50 percent of sustainable materials will be used, 30 percent recycled materials and 50 percent post-consumer materials will be recycled. The textile sector will be made 100 per cent circular by 2050 with a target of reducing the food footprint by 50 per cent by 2035.

He said that we should develop the textile sector keeping in mind regenerative and circular economy, new better fibres, digitalisation and AI, customer demand and local products. Explaining the difference between linear economy and circular economy, he said that linear economy means taking, making and disposing. Whereas circular economy means make, use and recycle. So that protection of the environment can be possible. He also gave information about Refibra technology, advanced sorting technology, saxel, circular weaving and natural fabric colours.

Himanshu Bodawala, then former president of the Chamber of Commerce and businessmen were present. Jolly Kochupurakkal gave detailed information about Palm NGO. Sanjay Punjabi, Coordinator of SGCCI Global Connect Mission 84, moderated the entire session and thanked the survey attendees. The speaker gave satisfactory answers to the questions of the entrepreneurs present in the session and then the session was concluded.
