Chennai: To give relief to the people from the skyrocketing prices of tomatoes, the Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday started selling it at Rs 60 per kg at 82 fair rates i.e. ration shops in the city. Cooperation Minister KR Periyakaruppan said the initiative would be extended to other parts of the state, if needed. He said the move would boost the sale of tomatoes at Pannai Pasumai (Farm Fresh) shops in Chennai, Coimbatore, Salem, Erode and Vellore by 60 percent. This is in addition to the rate of Rs. per kg.
An official of the Cooperative Department said that a plan has been made to provide one kg of tomatoes per day to a family. In the first phase, it will be sold at 32 locations in North Chennai and 25 fair price shops in Central and South Chennai. The decision to make tomatoes available through ration shops was taken in a meeting chaired by the Minister on Monday at the Secretariat. It was informed in the meeting that the prices have increased due to delay in supply of tomatoes from neighboring states.
Apart from tomatoes, the prices of green chillies, garlic, coriander and ginger are also at a high and their prices have reached Rs 150 to 200 per kg. According to a source, the retail price of tomatoes in Koyambedu wholesale market is Rs 110 per kg while In some parts of the city, it is being sold at an even higher price.
