New Delhi: Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said road safety is the government’s top priority and aims to reduce road accident deaths by 50 per cent by 2030. Addressing the CII National Conference on Road Safety – Indian Roads Attitude 2030 – Raising the Bar on Safety, Gadkari said the 4Es of road safety – Engineering (Road and Vehicle Engineering) – Enforcement – Education and Emergency Medical Services It is very important to focus on strengthening as well as bringing about changes in social behaviour. He stressed on cooperation of all stakeholders to improve road safety.
Gadkari said that according to the latest report on road accidents 2022, there have been 4.6 lakh road accidents, of which 1.68 lakh people have died and 4 lakh people have been seriously injured. He said that every hour there are 53 road accidents and 19 deaths. He said that road accidents have increased by 12 percent and deaths due to road accidents have increased by 10 percent, resulting in GDP loss of 3.14 percent. Percent socio-economic loss has occurred. Gadkari said that 60 percent of deaths occur in the youth group of 18 to 35 years. He said accidental deaths result in loss of a breadwinner for a family, professional loss for the employer and overall loss for the economy.
