First flight of Puri in 48 hours
Air India completed its first flight from Bombay to London in 48 hours. A huge crowd had gathered at the airport to witness this historic moment for Air India. Troops of journalists were busy clicking photographs of the first-timers going to London on a Tata Air India flight. Air India’s Malabar Princess left at its scheduled time with 35 passengers. Out of this, 29 passengers were going to London and 6 people had boarded for Geneva.
Air India did a full page advertisement in The Times of India on 3 June 1948 for the first international flight. The ticket for the first international flight was Rs 1720. Apart from the pilot, the crew members of the flight were very excited. Dressed in blue coat and sky blue skirt, the air hostess was also all set for her first foreign trip. JRD Tata himself had arrived at Bombay’s Santacruz airport to see off the plane. In this special plane, apart from Maharaja Duleep Singh, there were some players including Englishmen, businessmen. Tata himself waved everyone off. Today 75 years of this journey have been completed.
