Tata Group will become the first company in the country to make iPhone! Plant will be set up in this city

Tata Group may soon become the first Indian company to assemble iPhone for India and other global markets. Tata has been in talks for several months to acquire Taiwan-based Wistron Corp’s factory in Karnataka. As reported by Bloomberg. The report said that the two sides are close to an agreement. It has been claimed that the formal takeover could happen by August. Wistron assembles the iPhone 14 at its Karnataka facility, which will be overseen by the Tata group once the deal is finalised. Tata’s deal could boost India’s reputation in the hardware manufacturing sector, which has also been a long-term goal of the PM Narendra Modi-led government. The government has been aggressively pushing its Make-in-India initiative, which was also in discussion during PM Modi’s latest US visit.

The report states that Wistron’s factory in Karnataka is potentially worth $600 million (over Rs 4000 crore). The facility employs over 10,000 workers who assemble the latest generation iPhone 14. The report states that the Taiwanese manufacturer has committed to ship iPhones worth $1.8 billion to Apple in the current fiscal year. According to people familiar with the Tata-Wistron deal reported to Bloomberg, Wistron signed the deal with the iPhone maker to win fiscal years through March 2024. The factory is also planning to triple the number of employees at the plant by next year. Tata has reportedly agreed to honor these deals.

Apart from Wistron, Apple gets select iPhone models including the iPhone 13, iPhone 12 and iPhone SE assembled in India through Taiwanese suppliers such as Foxconn Technology Group and Pegatron Corp. Tata’s deal to take over the Wistron factory in India will also be significant as many tech companies are looking at alternatives to China for assembly of their premium devices. Apple is already counting heavily on India as its next manufacturing hub.
