Tata Power to invest Rs 13,000 crore in ‘Pumped Hydro Storage’ projects

Mumbai Tata Power will invest Rs 13,000 crore in two projects related to ‘Pumped Hydro Storage’ in Maharashtra. The company said on Tuesday that the total capacity of the two projects would be 2,800 MW. Pumped hydro storage projects (PSPs) involving hydropower ‘pump’ water from a lower reservoir to a higher reservoir when excess power is available. The same water is used to drive turbines located at a lower level to generate electricity during times of peak demand.
Both the pumped hydro storage projects will be set up at Shirvata in Pune and Bhivpuri in Raigad. While the Pune project will have a capacity of 1,800 MW, the Raigad project will have a capacity of 1,000 MW. Together these two projects will provide employment to 6,000 people. The company has been operating hydroelectric projects in the state for over a century. These projects are in Khopoli, Bhira and Bhivpuri.
Bhira consists of a 150 MW pumped hydro storage project. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between the Maharashtra government and the company in the presence of the state’s Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The company’s Managing Director and CEO Praveer Sinha said that PSP is a more efficient way of energy storage. This agreement is a big step towards clean and green energy.
