New Delhi. Tata Steel has partnered with Germany’s SMS Group to develop a low carbon steel manufacturing process. Tata Steel said in a statement on Thursday that under this Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), both the companies will hold further technical discussions and jointly conduct industrial demonstration of EasyMelt (Electric-Assisted Syngas Smelter) technology developed by SMS Group. The demonstration will be carried out at the E blast furnace of Tata Steel’s Jamshedpur plant, the statement said. It aims to reduce carbon emissions by more than 50 percent.
EasyMelt technology is an ironmaking solution that can be implemented to decarbonize existing steel plants. T V Narendran, CEO and MD, Tata Steel, said, “We are actively looking for solutions to transition to green steel production, thereby contributing to a greener future. Apart from this, India is the second largest steel producer in the world. In such a situation, big companies like Tata Steel have a big responsibility to contribute in the country’s journey to reduce carbon emissions.
