New Delhi: Elon Musk on Monday showcased a Tesla humanoid robot named Optimus, which greeted the billionaire’s followers with a hello and surprised everyone by doing some relaxing yoga poses. First showcased during Tesla AI Day 2022 in October, Optimus is this time seen performing simple tasks in a video posted by an X owner. Optimus is now able to calibrate its hands and legs on its own.
Using only vision and a joint position encoder, the robot can accurately locate its limbs in space. It learns its tasks smoothly, like sorting and solving colored blocks, and its neural net runs entirely on-board using only vision. The video shows that after a long day of work, the robot ‘does a little stretching’ and ends it with a ‘Namaste’.
The robot has the same artificial intelligence (AI) software and sensors that are present in Autopilot, Tesla’s advanced driver assistance system. Its price can be around $20,000. Humanoid robots designed for industrial production of ‘millions’ of units. According to a report, the robot has a 2.3 kWh battery pack which is ‘perfect for almost an entire day’s work’. It runs on a Tesla chip and has Wi-Fi and LTE connectivity.
The human-like hands are a ‘biologically inspired design’ that would make robots suitable for lifting objects of different shapes and sizes in factories and other facilities. Musk had said at the AI Day event, ‘This will be a fundamental change for civilization as we know it.’ He said the robot could cost ‘probably less than $20,000’. It will be able to carry a 20-pound bag, use tools, and have the precision required for smaller robots. It is also equipped with wireless connectivity as well as audio support and hardware level security features.
