New Delhi: A horrific train accident took place on Friday in Balasore district of Odisha. At least 50 people were killed and around 350 injured in a tripartite train accident involving the Coromandel Express and the Bengaluru-Howrah Express train derailed and a goods train collided. The officers provided this information. Several coaches of the Howrah-bound 12864 Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express derailed at Bahanga Bazar and fell onto another track, a railway official said. These derailed coaches collided with 12841 Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express and its coaches also overturned. The coaches of the Coromandel Express collided with a goods train after derailing, injuring the goods train as well, the official said. The accident took place at Bahanga Bazar station, about 255 km from Howrah, at around 7 pm, he said. This accident has exposed the safety claims of the Ministry of Railways. Railways had claimed zero accident through this system. For this, the Railways claimed to have implemented several safety technologies including Kavach.

The Ministry of Railways had tested Kavach technology last year. It was promoted vigorously. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav himself was on a train during this time. Armor is an anti-collision technology. Railways claims that this technology will help it achieve its goal of zero accident. Kavach was adopted as the National Automatic Train Protection System in the year 2020. Kavach is a SIL-4 certified technology, the highest level of safety. Railways claim that this technology is connected through micro processor, global positioning system and radio communication.

The purpose of this indigenously developed system is to prevent collision of trains. Railways claim that if two trains are facing each other on the same track, the Kavach technology reduces the speed of the train and applies brakes to the engine. This will avoid both the trains colliding with each other.

The government started the process of developing this system in the year 2012 and its trial started in 2014. Its state-of-the-art avatar has been kept to the highest safety and reliability standards. The question is whether this system was fitted in the Coromandel Express or not? If it was then the armor didn’t work. If it was not there then why it has not been installed in such an important train till now. It is considered one of the best trains in the country. The accident of Coromandel Express has once again put a question mark on the safety of trains.
