Survival drama has been a very popular genre abroad. Which includes many great films. This genre has not been explored much in Indian cinema, but films have been made on this genre from time to time. A recent example of this is the film The Goat Life.

The story of ‘Aadujeevitam’, the most popular novel of Malayalam literature, has been brought on screen by the film’s director Blesley. This story is also special because this story is actually about a person named Najeeb, who was kept as a slave in the Gulf country for three years. This film brings forward the heart-wrenching true story of torture and slavery related to it. Prithviraj Sukumaran’s brilliant acting has made this story more emotional, giving the mantra of fighting the difficulties of life.

True story of torture and slavery

Talking about the story, Najeeb (Prithviraj Sukumaran) is living with his mother and wife Saini (Amala Paul) in Kerala. Despite the shortcomings he is happy in his life. One day, with the persuasion of a friend, he decides to take up a job in the Gulf country to give a better life to his family. He reaches Saudi Arabia after mortgaging his house, but finds himself a slave herding goats in the middle of the desert, getting one loaf of bread for food and one for water for the whole day. A few sips. He wants to go back home and even tries to run away but when caught by the owner, one of his legs is broken. Days turn into weeks and weeks turn into months and months turn into years. Three years pass, but Najeeb does not remember because he himself has considered himself like those animals in that place where animals were kept. He doesn’t even have hope that he will be able to get out of here. Will he be able to escape this terrible life of torture and slavery? Will he be able to return to his home in Kerala after coming out of the desert? How does all this happen? This is the further story of the film.

Advantages and disadvantages of the film

This film brings forth a heart-wrenching picture of people moving to foreign countries in search of a better life, which at times brings tears to the eyes. The director has added every pain to the story with great detail. Subtitles have not been given to many of the Saudi Arabian dialogues in the film; perhaps this was the maker’s attempt to understand the way the character is struggling with the problem of not understanding the language. The audience could also feel that problem and he was successful in it. The cinematography of the film is excellent. This strengthens both the story and characters of the film from time to time. Be it the far-flung desert scenes or the backwaters of Kerala, they add a different color to the story. The music suits the story. The background music has become good. Talking about the shortcomings, Najeeb’s character had understood the importance of water in three years, hence why did he not take water with him while running away. If the character of Jimmy Jean had knowledge of the desert, was he unaware of the problems associated with it? Among the shortcomings, the length of the film could have been improved. Especially in the second part the story seems repetitive. This reduced the impact of the story a bit.

Great acting by Prithviraj Sukumaran
Prithviraj Sukumaran’s acting is superb. All the expressions of fear, irritation, helplessness, defeat, struggle and pain are seen on their faces. To play the character of Najeeb, he has adapted his body along with his expressions. For which he should be appreciated. From losing weight to growing beard, black teeth and dirty nails, he has assimilated it into his character. KR Gokul’s role may be small, but he has managed to register his presence. The acting of Jimmy Jean and Tlaib also remains memorable. Amala Paul also does justice to her character.
