The Agriculture Department has set a target of six lakh hectare area for its cultivation, which is about 20 percent more than last year’s 4.94 lakh hectare.
Chandigarh. Punjab’s agriculture department is planning to increase the area under basmati crop by about 20 per cent in the current sowing season. A senior official of the agriculture department said that Basmati cultivation is going to start this month itself. The Agriculture Department has set a target of six lakh hectare area for its cultivation, which is about 20 percent more than last year’s 4.94 lakh hectare. The state government plans to fix the support price for basmati crop at Rs 2,600 to Rs 2,800 per quintal.
To promote Basmati rice crop, the department has started ‘Kisan Mitra’ scheme, under which farmers will be given technical advice to sow it. The area under Basmati crop was 4.85 lakh hectare in 2021-22 and 4.06 lakh hectare in 2020-21. Paddy, including basmati, is grown in an area of about 30 lakh hectares every year in Punjab.
