why stopped export
To ensure adequate supply of rice domestically, the government has banned its export. Heavy rains have damaged crops in many parts of the country. For example, in Punjab, 60% of the paddy crop has been damaged. Crops have also been affected in West Bengal, Bihar and Assam. These states are major producers of non-basmati rice. Before banning export of rice, the government had imposed 20% export duty on rice in June.
India’s demand for rice
India exports 39.5 lakh tonnes of basmati and 172.7 lakh tonnes of non-basmati rice in the year 2022. Exports of basmati rice declined in 2022 as compared to 2021, while exports of non-basmati rice increased significantly. Prior to that, in 2020, exports of non-basmati rice had declined significantly while exports of basmati rice had increased marginally.
Decline in monthly exports
Rice exports from the country have declined since March. Exports of non-basmati rice from the country had reached a record level in March but since then have been on a steady decline. According to UN data, India exported more than 12 million tonnes of rice in 2020, which was about 25 percent of the world’s total exports. Exported 21 million tonnes of rice in India in 2022-23. Of this, 17.8 million tonnes was non-basmati rice.
Indian rice buyers
Most of the rice is exported from India to China, Bangladesh and Nepal. Along with this, many countries of Africa are also big buyers of Indian rice. African country Benin is at number one in the list of countries buying rice from India. It is followed by China, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Togo, Guinea, Bangladesh, Nepal, Vietnam and Kenya. However, it is a matter of relief for them that India has assured to fulfill the existing export contracts.

About 130 million tonnes of rice is produced annually in India. Of this, 80% is non-basmati rice. India’s exports account for about 40 percent of the total rice trade. Thailand, Vietnam, Pakistan, Burma, China, US, Cambodia, Brazil and Uruguay are the number of exporting countries after India.
China ahead in production
China is at the forefront of production in the world. It produces 149 million tonnes of rice annually in the country. After this is India’s number. According to the statistics of 2022-23, 86.6 percent of the world’s rice is produced in India. In terms of production, China and India are followed by Bangladesh, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, Philippines, Pakistan and Japan. India’s ban on rice exports may allow other countries like Thailand and Vietnam to take advantage of higher prices.
