Old Pension Scheme: Taking a major step, the Central Government has given an option to a select group of central employees to opt for the Old Pension Scheme (OPS). This has been revealed in an order issued by the Ministry of Personnel on Friday. The benefit of this option will be given to those central employees who joined the services of the central government against the advertised or notified posts before 22 December 2003, the day the National Pension System (NPS) was notified. They are eligible to join the old pension scheme under the Central Civil Services (Pension) Rules, 1972 (now 2021).

Know what is the last date

This option can be exercised by the concerned government servants till 31 August 2023. This step has been taken after various representations/references and court judgments in this regard. The order states that representations have been received from government employees appointed on or after January 1, 2004, requesting extension of pension scheme benefits under the Central Civil Services (Pension) Rules, 1972 (now 2021). The employees have cited court judgments of various High Courts and Central Administrative Tribunals to state that their appointments were made as per the posts/vacancies advertised/notified for recruitment prior to the notification issued for the National Pension System wherein the applicants were was allowed the benefit of Rs.

The order states that in the light of various representations/references and judgments of courts in this regard, the matter has been examined in consultation with Department of Financial Services, Department of Personnel and Training, Department of Expenditure and Department of Legal Affairs. Wherein it has been decided that in all cases where a Central Government civil servant has been appointed against a post or vacancy which was advertised/notified for recruitment/appointment, from the date of notification for NPS Covered under the National Pension System earlier i.e. 22 December 2003 and joining service on or after 1 January 2004, to be covered under the Central Civil Services (Pension) Rules, 1972 (now 2021) option may be given.

Chosen option will be the final option

It has been said in the order that those government employees who are eligible to exercise this option, but are unable to exercise this option by the stipulated date, will continue to be covered by the National Pension System. The said option once exercised shall be the final option. If the Government servant fulfills the conditions of coverage under the Central Civil Services (Pension) Rules, 1972 (now 2021), necessary orders in this regard will be issued by October 31, 2023.
