These states topped in Income Tax filing, Bihar at 20th place

income tax: There has been an increase in the number of people filing income tax returns in the country. There are many states in the country which have left other states far behind in filing income tax. However, Bihar has reached 20th position in the country in terms of the number of income taxpayers filing income tax returns. During the financial year 2022-23, 21,54,266 people of Bihar have filed income tax returns. Whereas 7,40,09,046 people across the country have filed income returns. According to the report of the Finance Ministry, people of Maharashtra, Delhi, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat are among the states with the highest number of income tax return files. But among these, Bihar is at 20th place. Whereas only 22.22 percent people of Bihar have paid tax to the government. That means the tax liability of 78 percent people was zero. Only 4,78,603 people deposited tax.
Maharashtra at second place
The highest income tax in the country comes from Maharashtra. In the year 2022-23, income tax of Rs 6,14,144.56 crore was collected from Maharashtra. Delhi stood second with a tax liability of Rs 2,12,101.08 crore. Whereas the people of Karnataka gave Rs 2,05,372.11 crore. Whereas Tamil Nadu stood at fourth place with income tax collection of Rs 1,07,331.93. Whereas the income taxpayers of Gujarat state are at fifth position with Rs 83,993.78 crore.

How was the trend of income tax in Bihar?
Bihar has seen an increase in revenue from income tax from 2018 to 2022. However, the state seems to be lagging behind every year. Tax of Rs 6239.40 crore was collected in the financial year 2018-19. Bihar was at 18th position in the list of states filing returns this year. Whereas, in the year 2019- 20, the total revenue was Rs 5723.48 crore and the rank of Bihar was 17th. Bihar reached 18th position in the list in the year 2020-21 and again reached 17th position in the year 2021-22. Whereas, in the financial year 2022-23, Bihar is at 20th place with tax collection of Rs 7395.40 crore.
