Colombo: Sri Lanka have included Binura Fernando and Pramod Madushan in their Asia Cup squad after three experienced fast bowlers were ruled out of the squad due to injury. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) confirmed this on Tuesday. Legspin-bowling all-rounder Dushan Hemanta has also made it into the squad as a replacement for Wanindu Hasaranga, while Kusal Perera has also returned to the ODI squad after two years.
Fernando, who has played four ODIs, and Madushan, who has played one ODI, come into the squad in the absence of injured Dushmanta Chameera, Dilshan Madushanka and Lahiru Kumara. While Lahiru’s injury is minor, Chameera and Madushanka are also struggling to be fit in time for the World Cup, starting on October 5. Hasaranga, who was ruled out of the team with a thigh strain, could have played towards the end of the Asia Cup but with the World Cup round the corner, SLC has decided not to risk aggravating the injury.
Besides Mathisha Pathirana and Kasun Rajitha are Sri Lanka’s pacers, while left-arm spinning all-rounder Dunith Velalge joins Hemantha and Mahesh Teekshana in the spin-bowling group. Sri Lanka will play their first Asia Cup match against Bangladesh on Thursday.
Sri Lankan squad for Asia Cup: Dasun Shanaka (c), Pathum Nissanka, Dimuth Karunaratne, Kusal Mendis (wk), Kusal Perera, Dhananjay de Silva, Charit Aslanka, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Dunith Velalge, Mahish Teekshana, Mathisha Pathirana, Kasun Rajitha, Dushan Hemanta, Binura Fernando, Pramod Madushan.
