From the government to the general public National Cooperative Consumers Federation of India (NCCF) and National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) through which cheap tomatoes will be made available in Delhi and some other major cities. Let us tell you that before this, tomatoes were started to be sold by the government last week at the highest rate for the people. At that time the government had fixed its rate at Rs.80 per kg. The government believes that this is going to be of great help in controlling the price of tomatoes.
Tomato reached Rs 140 per kg
The price of tomato has reached Rs 120 to 140 per kg in the retail market. At the same time, according to the report, the price of tomato has reached Rs 245 per kg at some places. According to an official statement, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs has directed the NCCF and NAFED to sell tomatoes at a retail price of Rs 70 per kg from today in view of the fall in tomato prices. Tomatoes procured by NCCF and NAFED were initially sold at Rs 90 per kg. After this, from July 16, its price was reduced to Rs 80 per kg. The Central Government believes that by reducing the price and selling it at Rs 70 per kg, the consumers will get more benefit.
Central government bought tomatoes from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra
On the instructions of the Central Government, NCCF and NAFED started procuring tomatoes from the mandis of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra, where maximum increase in retail prices has been recorded in the last one month, to simultaneously increase availability in the major consumption centres. The retail sale of tomatoes in Delhi started on 14 July. Till July 18, a total of 391 tonnes of tomatoes were procured from both the agencies. Mainly being continuously made available to retail consumers in Delhi and surrounding cities, major consumption centers of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
The average price was around Rs 120 on Wednesday
According to the data of the Department of Consumer Affairs, the all-India average retail price of tomato stood at Rs 119.29 per kg on Wednesday. The maximum retail price is Rs 245 per kg, while the minimum retail price is Rs 40 per kg and the model price is Rs 120 per kg. Tomato prices in the retail markets of the national capital declined from Rs 178 per kg on Sunday to an average of Rs 120 per kg on Thursday. In other metros, tomato was selling at Rs 155 per kg in Mumbai, Rs 132 per kg in Chennai and Rs 143 per kg in Kolkata. Tomato prices generally increase during the July-August and October-November periods. These are generally low tomato production months. Tomato rates have increased drastically due to supply constraints due to monsoon.

While the rising prices of tomatoes have made a big impact on the pocket of the common man, it has proved to be a profitable deal for a farmer from Pune, Maharashtra. Overcoming all the challenges, this Pune farmer has earned Rs 3 crore by selling tomato crop in the last one month. Ishwar Gaikar (36), a farmer from Pachghar village in Junnar tehsil of Pune district, had to throw away a large quantity of tomato crop in May this year due to low prices. Despite this setback, this farmer showed unwavering determination and cultivated tomatoes on his 12-acre farm. Now amidst the skyrocketing prices of tomatoes, Gaykar’s hard work has paid off and he has become a millionaire. Gaikar claims that he has earned Rs 3 crore by selling his tomato produce between June 11 and July 18.
