New Delhi: The Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution said on Friday that the Indian National Cooperative Consumer Federation Ltd. (NCCF) and Nafed have been directed to sell tomatoes at a retail price of Rs 40 per kg from August 20. Right now these agencies are selling tomatoes at Rs.50. The Department of Consumer Affairs has issued this fresh directive in view of the continuous fall in the prices of tomatoes in the wholesale and retail markets.
The ministry release said, “Retail sale of tomatoes in Delhi-NCR commenced from July 14, 2023. Till August 13, 2023, both the agencies have procured a total of 15 lakh kg of tomatoes, which are being continuously sold to retail consumers in major consumption centers of the country. These locations include Delhi-NCR, Rajasthan (Jaipur, Kota), Uttar Pradesh (Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi, Prayagraj) and Bihar (Patna, Muzaffarpur, Arrah, Buxar).”
The retail price of tomatoes procured by NCCF and NAFED was initially fixed at Rs 90 per kg which was gradually reduced in line with the fall in prices to ensure benefit to the consumers.
The retail price was reduced to Rs 50 on August 15 and is now being reduced to Rs 40. It may be mentioned that on the instructions of the Department of Consumer Affairs, NCCF and NAFED have started procurement of tomatoes from mandis of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra for simultaneous sale in major consumption centers where retail prices have reached maximum in the last one month. growth has been registered.
