Chennai (Best Hindu News): People in Tamil Nadu are not getting any respite from the rising tomato prices. On Monday, its wholesale price touched Rs 200 per kg in the state capital and several cities. Due to shortage of tomatoes in Chennai’s Koyambedu wholesale market, prices have shot up sharply.
Wholesale vegetable seller in Koyambedu market P.V. Ahmad said, “Tomato arrivals from both the states have reduced due to heavy crop damage due to intermittent rains in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The crop has been completely ruined due to heavy rains and hence the arrival of tomatoes has come down. This has increased the prices of tomatoes in the market. Traders also said that the price is likely to increase by Rs 250 per kg in a week.
P. Sukumaran, secretary of the Koyambedu Wholesale Merchants Association, said, for the first time in the history of this market, the price of tomato has touched Rs 200 per kg. This is unprecedented. We were expecting the rates to stabilize by July 20, but sudden rains ruined the crop and more than 50 per cent of tomato cultivation in Andhra and Karnataka got ruined due to rains. While tomato is being sold at Rs 200 per kg in the wholesale market, its price is also Rs 185 per kg in some retail shops.
Kuppusamy, a vegetable seller in Pammal, Chennai, said, “We are selling tomatoes at a lower price than what we buy because we want to avoid wastage. The sales volume has also come down drastically and people are not buying tomatoes. Instead they are eating other vegetables.
