The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on Thursday sought suggestions from various parties on the auction of three new spectrum bands 37-37.5 GHz, 37.5-40 GHz and 42.5-43.5 GHz for mobile services. The regulator has issued a consultation paper to discuss issues related to pricing, validity and payment terms of these radio waves.
A consultation paper has been issued on auction of spectrum in the 37-37.5 GHz, 37.5-40 GHz and 42.5-43.5 GHz bands identified for International Mobile Telephony (IMT), the telecom regulator said in a statement on ‘X’ post. . TRAI has asked the industry to submit written suggestions on the issues raised in the consultation paper by May 2, 2024 and counter comments by May 16, 2024.
TRAI, in its consultation paper, has sought industry opinion on various nuances of auctioning spectrum in these new bands. This includes pricing, validity, preferred block size, spectrum cap, implementation obligations and other terms and conditions. This proposal will make 4,000 MHz spectrum available for future 5-G services.
It is noteworthy that the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has postponed the spectrum auction by 17 days till June 6, 2024. Earlier this date was fixed for 20th May, which has been changed to 6th June. Now the mock auction will be held on June 3, 2024 instead of May 13 and 14. The central government will auction eight spectrum bands for mobile phone services at a base price of about Rs 96317 crore.
