Insurgency and terrorism have always demanded a superman from military intelligence, and the dynamism of insurgency, counter-action, imposes an unbearable burden of doubt about their legal validity and juridiciality, especially when military power is used against loved ones. has been done. Something similar happened on the night of June 5, 1984, when the Indian Army had to take over the task of liberating Harimandir Sahib Amritsar, the most sacred place of the Sikhs, from various groups of armed fanatics. A hero of selfish Akali (Sikh) politicians and many unfortunate, innocent passengers, unnecessarily became victims of face-to-face firing. These groups of armed forces were loyal to Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, a popular figure in Sikh politics, whose blinding influence changed the course of events in the Punjab. Very carefully planned and preparations were made for the rescue. This was the prodigy of a seasoned general’s tact and sharp mind. In this case Subeg displayed tremendous art and skill in barricading the Harimandir area. The Akal Takht building, where Bhindranwala’s head-quarters and command post was built, was very cleverly chosen as a central defense station.

In military parlance, if it is called a ‘place of strategic importance’ or a ‘place of utmost importance’, it means that the Akal Takht will have to accept the pivot of the defence-system. Its barricades were raised from the basement upwards. In which this process of determining the location of weapons was made from the ground level, window level, skylights and went on from the first floor to the upper floors. Paved fronts were made by cutting the walls and marbles. To provide depth and security to the Akal Takht, all the approaches to the Akal Takht were built on the roofs of all buildings along the entire Harimandir complex and windows filled with sandbags were made for firing. Very high Ramgarhi bastions and high ramparts were made to rest weapons on the high water tank near the langar hall. Wherever possible, machine gun emplacements were elaborately placed in some inconspicuous corners and nooks of the compound. Landmine tunnels and mines were elaborately designed as death traps. In addition, forward warning posts were set up in the fortified buildings of the outer chowgirada of the Harimandir, where extremist units stood guard. Elaborate communication arrangements were established throughout the defense system and such a large stock of food and drink was accumulated, which could last for two months, if not more. Before implementing the scheme in the final form, the final decision was taken after examining several schemes. This seemed most appropriate at the time. Any other plan would have been ideal if it had been put into practice a few months earlier and before the religious shrine was fortified, but now it is a matter of history.

The Indian soldiers have displayed stupendous fortitude and bravery in the face of overwhelming odds against them. For fighting the war with dignity, there is no doubt that the army paid a heavy price in terms of wounded and dead, and its men never disobeyed orders given to them, despite extreme provocation. As an officer I had to give some very unpleasant orders to the soldiers under my command. I did so because of their unquestioning and unshakable obedience, their restraint and the noble cause of maintaining the integrity of our nation. I salute them for their sacrifice. A soldier takes an oath of things like ‘duty, honor and country’ and lives for it only. Indian soldiers have amply confirmed this teaching during Operation Blue Star, perhaps never seen before.

While saluting the soldiers who were martyred for the unity and integrity of the country, I pray to the almighty that the country should not face such a situation again. Political parties and their leaders of the country need to introspect today. It can be understood from Operation Blue Star how fatal it can prove to be at stake for political selfishness. All regional and national parties should take a pledge today that such narrow politics should not happen in future.
