Twitter has around 300,000 verified users, many of whom are journalists, athletes and celebrities. Blue ticks have stopped appearing from the profiles of these users.

San Francisco. Social media platform Twitter, owned by Elon Musk, has removed the ‘blue ticks’ of well-known personalities such as famous singer Beyonce, Pope Francis, television presenter Oprah Winfrey and former US President Donald Trump. Twitter has started removing ‘blue ticks’ from Thursday for those who have not paid the monthly fee for it. Twitter has around 300,000 verified users, many of whom are journalists, athletes and celebrities. Blue ticks have stopped appearing from the profiles of these users. A ‘blue tick’ refers to a verified Twitter account of a personality.

Blue Tick’s fees start at $8 per month for an individual Twitter user and $1,000 per month for an organization. Twitter no longer verifies the account of any individual or organization without charge. Everyone from basketball player LeBron James to author Stephen King and Star Trek star William Shatner refused to pay for the Blue Tick. However, on Thursday, there was a blue tick on the accounts of all three. “My Twitter account says I bought Blue Tick, but I haven’t,” King tweeted on Thursday. Responding to King’s tweet, Musk said: “Hello, you’re welcome.”

In another tweet, he said he was “privately paying for select people”. Have bought the tick and verified my phone number.” Not only celebrities and journalists, but many government agencies, non-profit organizations and public service sector accounts around the world lost the blue tick on Thursday, causing concern. Concerns have arisen that Twitter may lose its status as a platform for accurate, up-to-date information from reliable sources. Significantly, after buying San Francisco-based Twitter for $ 44 billion in October, Musk is trying to increase the revenue of this microblogging site. Twitter started giving ‘blue ticks’ about 14 years ago to protect celebrities from impersonators.
