New Delhi. Online cab service provider Uber has entered into an agreement with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to create its own cab service zones at airports operated under the authority. Speaking to PTI, Prabhjit Singh, President of Uber’s India and South Asia unit, said that an MoU has been signed to create Uber cab service zones at several AAI airports. This will enable Uber to create dedicated pickup and drop points within the airport premises as well as provide convenient parking for partner drivers.
Describing the agreement as an important step for growth, Singh said, “In this way, we will be able to participate in the aviation sector, which is one of the fastest growing sectors of the Indian economy.” He said that due to the generally remoteness of airports from residential areas of cities, commuting to the airport is a major source of cab revenue. Cab services to and from the airport also account for about 17 per cent of Uber’s total revenue. AAI operates around 137 airports across the country while Uber provides cab services in over 120 cities.
