After weeks of talks between representatives of the UK and the European Commission, an agreement has been reached to resolve the trade dispute over Northern Ireland. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen was also personally present with Sunak in this last round of talks.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Monday announced a new deal with the European Union (EU) to resolve the post-Brexit trade dispute with Northern Ireland. After weeks of talks between representatives of the UK and the European Commission, an agreement has been reached to resolve the trade dispute over Northern Ireland. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen was also personally present with Sunak in this last round of talks.
Sunak told reporters after the meeting, “We have been able to reach a conclusive agreement in this direction.” Together we have replaced the original agreement and are announcing here the new Windsor Agreement. Ursula also praised Sunak’s optimistic outlook, saying that with this agreement Britain and the European Union will be able to start a new chapter of mutual relations in the post-Brexit era. The two sides have been at loggerheads over the trade status of Northern Ireland following the Brexit deal for Britain’s withdrawal from the European Union.
Under the Northern Ireland Protocol, an attempt was made to give a new dimension to the business relationship between Northern Ireland, part of the UK, and Ireland, which is part of the European Union. But there was a dispute because this relationship could not be smooth. However, the new agreement will have to be approved by the Parliament of Ireland. The next challenge before the British Prime Minister will be to get the support of the Northern Ireland Democratic Unionist Party on this deal.
