London, April 4 Britain on Tuesday imposed a fine of 12.7 million pounds (about Rs 130 crore) on the Chinese video app Tiktok. The fine has been imposed for breaching data protection laws, including failing to lawfully access personal information relating to children. Information regulator the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) estimates that TikTok allowed 1.4 million children under the age of 13 to use its platform in 2020.
However, the company’s own rules do not allow children of this age to open an account on TikTok. UK data protection law requires organizations that use personal information to provide information services to children under the age of 13 with their parents or carers’ consent. Britain’s Information Commissioner John Edwards said that we have ensured through legislation that our children are as safe in the digital world as they are in the physical world. Tiktok did not follow those laws. He said that we have imposed a fine of 12.7 million pounds for failing to follow the law.
