Up to 10 percent loss in wheat crop due to unseasonal rains, Center is not afraid of decline in production

New Delhi : The unseasonal rains have almost ruined the wheat crop. According to a report in the news agency Bhasha, the wheat crop was damaged by about 10 percent due to unseasonal rains, but the central government is confident that there will be no decline in wheat production due to unseasonal rains. About 8-10 per cent of the wheat crop is expected to be damaged due to the recent unseasonal rains and hailstorms in major growing states, but the possibility of better yield in late-sown areas has boosted production, reported Bhasha. I hope to make up for the loss.

There will be a record production of wheat

Agriculture Commissioner PK Singh said that despite the recent bad weather, according to the second estimate of the Ministry of Agriculture, the country’s total wheat production this year will reach a record 112.2 million tonnes. India is one of the major wheat producing countries, which is the staple food of a large population here. For the past few weeks, major wheat producing states of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh have received unseasonal rains with thunder, hailstorm and strong winds due to western disturbances at a time when the crop was almost ready for harvesting.

Crop Damage Review

Unseasonal rains and hailstorm have damaged the crop at some places and also increased yield in areas with late sowing, he said after a review meeting with senior officials of major wheat-producing states. He said that about 8-10 per cent wheat crop damage has been estimated in those areas due to hailstorm, storm and strong winds causing the plants to fall on the ground.

Unseasonal rains do not cause much damage to wheat

He said that wheat has not suffered much damage in view of total 3.4 crore hectares of wheat sown in the country this year. The agriculture commissioner said that in other places where there was no hailstorm and strong winds, the unseasonal rains have improved the soil moisture and further increased the yield potential of the wheat crop. The drop in temperature during the grain filling stage would further improve the yield, he said.

80 percent crop harvesting in Madhya Pradesh-Rajasthan

Singh further said that unseasonal rains have benefited the crop in more area and crop yield is likely to be 10-15 per cent higher in late sowing areas. He said that 80 percent of the wheat crop has been harvested in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. Therefore, there has not been much damage to the crop in both these states. Among other states, about 25 per cent area under wheat was sown late in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana and unseasonal rains at these places are helping in crop growth, he said.
