New Delhi: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the general budget for the financial year 2023-24 on Wednesday. In this, an allocation of Rs 2.40 lakh crore has been proposed for the Railways. This is 49 percent more than the previous budget and nine times more than in 2013-14. With this, especially the work of making Vande Bharat Express trains will be done faster. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav says that now Vande Bharat trains will be made at four places. Till now only Vande Bharat trains were being made in Chennai. But now Vande Bharat Express trains will also be made in Sonepat in Haryana, Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh and Latur in Maharashtra.

At present, Vande Bharat Express trains are running on eight routes in the country. Railways have set a target of running 75 such trains on the occasion of Amrit Mahotsav of Independence. A provision of Rs 17296.9 crore has been made in the budget for track improvement, which was Rs 15,388.1 crore according to the revised estimate for 2022-23. Railways has planned to spend a total of Rs 75,000 crore to upgrade the infrastructure for Vande Bharat trains. There is a plan to run a total of 400 Vande Bharat trains in the country in the next three years. At present, these trains are being manufactured only at the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai. But now Vande Bharat trains will also be made in Sonipat, Rae Bareli and Latur.

Where will the budget be spent

Presenting the budget, Sitharaman said 100 critical transport infrastructure projects have been identified for last and first-mile connectivity for the coal, fertilizer and foodgrain sectors, which will be taken up on priority with an investment of Rs 75,000 crore . In this, 15 thousand crore rupees will be from the private sector. He said that with the increasing expectation of passengers traveling by rail, there are plans to upgrade more than 1,000 coaches of major trains like Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto, Humsafar and Tejas. The interiors of these coaches will be made state-of-the-art and improved for passenger comfort.

100 more Vistadome coaches will be made to attract tourists. In this budget, the government has proposed to manufacture 35 hydrogen fuel-based trains, 4,500 newly designed automobile carrier coaches with side entry, 5,000 LHB coaches and 58,000 wagons. According to the budget document, the gross revenue expenditure of the Railways in the budget estimate for the year 2023-24 was Rs 2,65,000 crore, which was Rs 2,42,892.77 crore in the revised estimate for the year 2022-23.
