In the report, the committee noted that during the budget speech for the year 2022-23, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had announced 400 Vande Bharat trains. The Committee observed that as on 17 February 2023, Indian Railways has commissioned only 10 pairs of Vande Bharat Express trains. The committee has been informed that a plan has been made to manufacture 400 Vande Bharat rakes in a phased manner within the railway production units. Marathwada Rail Coach Factory will manufacture 120 rakes, Chennai Factory 80, Sonipat Factory 100 and Modern Coach Factory Rae Bareli 100 rakes.
Not a single Vande Bharat in many states
The Committee expressed its displeasure that against the target of 35 rakes for the year 2023, only eight rakes could be manufactured. The Committee is of the view that at this pace of production the Railways will not be able to achieve its set target. It added that the committee would like to suggest the ministry to intensify its efforts to produce Vande Bharat coaches/rakes to meet the aspirations of rail passengers. Maximum four Vande Bharat Express are currently running in Maharashtra. But Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Kerala, Northeast and Odisha are included. Punjab and Haryana have also not received the gift of Vande Bharat. Although Vande Bharat going from Delhi to Katra and Himachal passes through these states.
