The wholesale sales of the country’s leading automakers – Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai Motor and Tata Motors – jumped over 10 per cent in April as demand for SUVs remained strong. The country’s largest auto maker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) said its domestic passenger vehicle sales rose 13 per cent to 1,37,320 units in April as against 1,21,995 units sold in the year-ago period. While sales of MSI’s small cars – Alto and S-Presso declined by 18 per cent to 14,110 units, sales of Swift, Celerio, Ignis, Baleno and Dzire grew by 27 per cent to 74,935 units during the period. MSI registered an eight per cent year-on-year growth in the utility vehicle segment of Brezza, Grand Vitara and Ertiga and sold 36,754 units in April.

MSI senior executive officer (marketing and sales) Shashank Srivastava said semiconductor shortage impacted the company’s production in April but its market share in the SUV segment rose to 21 per cent from 12.6 per cent a year ago. Hyundai Motor India’s wholesale sales in the domestic market grew by 13 per cent to 49,701 units as against 44,001 units a year ago. However, the company’s exports declined to 8,500 units in April from 12,200 vehicles a year ago. Tarun Garg, Chief Operating Officer, Hyundai Motor India said, “The recently launched new Verna car has received a great response from the customers. The trend is expected to continue with the upcoming SUV ‘Hyundai Xeter’.

Tata Motors’ passenger vehicle wholesales in the domestic market grew by 13 per cent to 47,007 units as against the 41,587 vehicles it supplied in April 2022. Kia India wholesaled 23,216 vehicles last month, registering a high growth of 22 per cent in domestic deliveries. It sold 19,019 vehicles in the same period a year ago. In this bullish phase, Toyota Kirloskar Motor’s wholesale sales declined by 6 per cent to 14,162 units. The company sold 15,086 vehicles in the domestic market in April 2022. The company said it had shut down manufacturing for a week from April 24-28, 2023, to carry out maintenance of machinery and equipment to maintain operational efficiency, productivity and safety.

Nissan Motor India delivered 2,617 vehicles to the domestic market in April, up 24 per cent from a year ago. At the same time, MG Motor India said that in April 2023, its retail sales doubled to 4,551 units on an annual basis. The company had registered retail sales of 2,008 units in April, 2022.
