The Walmart Foundation on Wednesday announced its plan to support an additional one million smallholder farmers in India, including at least 50 percent women, over the next five years. The foundation also announced two new grants, including $3 million to Technoserve to reach 30,000 farmers and 24 farmer producer organizations (FPOs) in Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh. Of these, 50 per cent are expected to be women.

Another grant of $5,33,876 (over Rs 4.41 crore) will be given to NGO Trickle Up to reach out to 1,000 women smallholder farmers in Odisha and link them to two FPOs, the foundation said. He said that the main focus is to ensure that this system works better for the farmers.

Addressing a conference here, Walmart Foundation President Kathleen McLaughlin said, “The Foundation’s latest commitment builds on our efforts to identify solutions to increase market access for smallholder farmers in India.” It aims to increase agricultural inputs, provide technology support to small farmers in India such as market access, new buyers and cashless transactions among others and make them self-reliant.
