Melbourne, Have you ever thought about your loved one during a boring meeting? Or while driving to the supermarket, have you pondered the plot of a movie you recently watched? This is a cognitive phenomenon called “mind wandering.” Research shows that this can account for up to 50% of our waking cognition (our mental processes while awake) in both Western and non-Western societies. So what can help make this time productive and beneficial? mind wandering is not a daydream
Mind wandering is often associated with daydreaming. Both of these are considered types of inattention but they are not the same thing.
Mind wandering is related to the primary task, such as reading a book, listening to a lecture or attending a meeting. In such a situation, the mind diverts from the task you are doing and focuses on internally generated, unrelated thoughts.
On the other hand, daydreaming does not involve any primary, active work. For example, daydreaming would be to think about an ex-partner while traveling on a bus and looking out the window. Or lying in bed wondering what it would be like to go on holiday abroad.
If you were driving a bus or making the bed and your thoughts deviated from the primary task, this would be considered mind wandering.
