In parts of Madhya Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana, the wheat crop has reached vegetative stage. Mahalanobis National Crop Forecasting Center (MNCFC) has said this in its report. On the other hand, in eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, due to delay in sowing, the wheat crop has not yet reached the leafing stage, MNCFC said in its latest report. The life cycle of a wheat plant is divided into three main developmental stages such as the leafing stage in which the leaves and stem develop; Second stage of breeding, and third stage of grain filler.
The wheat crop generally enters the grain filling stage in March and any abnormal rise in temperature can result in loss of yield. Wheat is the main rabi crop, harvesting of which will start from the end of next month. The government has estimated a record wheat production of 11 crore 21.8 lakh tonnes in the crop year 2022-23 (July-June). The government has set up a committee to monitor the impact of rise in temperature on the wheat crop to avoid a situation similar to last year’s when production declined due to heatwave. MNCFC has been set up under the aegis of the Ministry of Agriculture to drive the use of space and related technology for better agricultural forecasting and drought assessment.
