New Delhi: There may be a reduction in the price of wheat and flour in the country soon. Appreciating the government’s decision to sell three million tonnes of wheat in the open market, the apex body of flour millers said it would bring down the price of wheat and flour by Rs 5-6 per kg. To check rising prices of wheat and wheat flour, the central government has announced to sell 30 lakh tonnes of wheat from its buffer stock in the open market. Last year, the price of wheat had increased by 37 per cent and so far this year it has seen a jump of seven per cent. Last year, wheat production was affected due to rising heat. Also, after Russia’s attack on Ukraine, the price of wheat has increased internationally.
According to the government, the Food Corporation of India (FCI) will sell wheat in the open market through various channels in the next two months. While wheat will be sold through e-auction to wholesalers like flour mill owners, FCI wheat will be sold to public sector units/cooperatives/federations for grinding wheat to make flour and make it available to the public at a maximum retail price (MRP) of Rs 29.50. , will sell to Kendriya Bhandar/NCCF/NAFED at the rate of Rs.23.50 per kg.

Pramod Kumar, president of Roller Flour Millers Federation of India (RFMFI), said, “We welcome the government’s move. This decision should have been taken a month ago. This is the right step. Wholesale and retail prices will soon come down to Rs 5-6 per kg. According to government data, the average price of wheat in major cities stood at Rs 33.43 per kg on Wednesday, compared to Rs 28.24 per kg at this time last year. The average price of wheat flour was recorded at Rs 37.95 per kg as against Rs 31.41 per kg at the same time last year.
