Wheat procurement in the current rabi season in Punjab is expected to increase to 12 million tonnes this year despite crop failure due to bad weather. An official of the Punjab Food and Civil Supplies Department said that considering the arrival of the crop in the mandis of the state, Punjab is expected to procure 12 million tonnes of wheat. Last year wheat procurement was 96.47 lakh tonnes. In the last season, the crop was adversely affected by the weather due to sudden increase in heat during March.
Unseasonal rains, hailstorm and strong winds in March and April this year caused heavy damage to wheat and other crops at many places including Fazilka, Muktsar, Moga and Patiala districts of Punjab. Out of the total 34.90 lakh hectare crop in the state, about 14 lakh hectare crop has been affected by the bad weather. However, the state agriculture department has estimated an average yield of 47.24 quintals per hectare or 19 quintals per acre during crop cutting experiments. With its results, the department expects the production of wheat to be 160-165 lakh tonnes.
