Will Tata Sons’ August 29 AGM give an indication of Maya Tata’s future role?

Mumbai (Uttam Hindu News): The patrons of the diversified Tata group – the Tata family – have installed a newbie in a key managerial position to polish the conglomerate’s legacy and its legend. Maya Tata, a 34-year-old scion of the Tata family who lives away from Arc Light, is believed to be being groomed to take up a key position within the group.

Maya Tata, who has been inducted as board members of the Tata Medical Center Trust along with her siblings Leah and Neville, is understood to have seen potential in Ratan Tata. It is not known how she will act in the future, as the exact contours are currently a matter of conjecture. The August 29 AGM of Tata Sons may give a clue in this regard.

However, Maya Tata has an excellent pedigree as she is Ratan Tata’s half-brother Noel Tata and Alu Mistry, daughter of late billionaire Pallonji Mistry and sister of Cyrus Mistry, former chairman of the Tata Group, who unfortunately passed away in a car accident . The Mistry family has long owned about 18.4 per cent stake in Tata’s holding company Tata Sons Ltd and Sterling Investment Group through Cyrus Investments Pvt Ltd. ,

The Shapoorji Pallonji (SP) Group, which holds around 18.4 per cent stake in Tata Sons, is unlikely to be in any adversarial position during the latter’s annual general meeting (AGM) scheduled for August 29. This will be the first AGM of Tata Sons after the death of former Tata holding company chairman Cyrus Mistry in a road accident last year.

Tata Sons declared a dividend of 1,750 per cent for FY2013, up from 1,000 per cent a year earlier. Dividend payment includes cash inflow of Rs.707.1 crore as against Rs.404 crore in the previous year. As such, he has a dual Tata connection, his father Noel being the half-brother of Ratan Tata, while his mother being the sister of the late Cyrus Mistry.

Maya studied at Bayes Business School and the University of Warwick in the UK. She is the granddaughter of Noel Tata and his second wife, Simone Tata.

He started by joining Tata Opportunities Fund, an integral subsidiary of Tata Capital. At the fund, Maya honed her skills in portfolio management and investor relations while understanding the complex dynamics of the corporate world.

The sudden closure of the Tata Opportunities Fund marked an unexpected turn in Maya’s career path. This sudden change prompted him to move to Tata Digital, a subsidiary of the Tata Group, which focuses on harnessing the potential of the digital sector. The group, headed by N. Chandrasekaran, allocated a substantial amount of Rs 1,000 crore for Tata Digital’s plans. The Tata Neu app has not found the expected success or impact as thought by the group.

Maya Tata’s partnership with Tata Digital coincides with the launch of the Tata Now app, a new platform. It gives users a personalized and immersive shopping experience.

This strategic move will enable Maya to adopt new age technologies to drive business growth.
