Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Wednesday said mandatory quality control norms for 675 products are under consideration. Its aim is to prevent import of substandard products and promote domestic industry. Products covered under Quality Control Orders (QCOs) cannot be manufactured, traded or imported without notifying the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and without the BIS mark. Goyal also holds the Ministry of Consumer Affairs.
So far this year, 58 draft QCOs for 316 products are at various stages, he told reporters. He said, “A total of 675 products are under consideration of 14 ministries so that this culture of quality pervades our work today. This will help us reduce costs, improve competitiveness, boost exports, generate employment and boost the image of Brand India.
