World Health Day 2024: My health, my right

World Health Day is celebrated every year on 7th April. It is a Global Health Awareness Day which is celebrated every seven years by the World Health Organization, i.e. WHO in collaboration with other related organizations. 7th April is the date on which WHO was established in 1948.

Started for the first time in 1950

Celebrating this day was started for the first time in the year 1950 by the First World Health Assembly. Every year on this day, a specific health topic that is a matter of concern for the health of people around the world is discussed and special emphasis is given on increasing awareness about it.

Air pollution is taking one life every five seconds

Today, due to various reasons, the health of people all over the world is being affected. Due to diseases and disasters, many people are becoming disabled and are on the verge of death. Such unfavorable conditions make life difficult, causing death, pain, hunger and mental distress. Apart from these crises, burning of fossil fuels is not only posing a threat to our lives by polluting the air but is also increasing the climate crisis. Along with these, indoor and outdoor air pollution is taking one life every five seconds.

140 The Constitution of the country considers health as a human right.

According to the WHO Council on Economics of Health for All, at least 140 countries recognize health as a human right in their constitutions. Yet countries are not passing laws to ensure access to health services for their population and are not implementing them. Worth noting here is the fact that in 2021, at least 4.5 billion people – more than half the world’s population – were not fully covered by essential health services.

This year’s theme is ‘My health, my right’

To deal with all these challenges, the theme of World Health Day 2024 has been kept as ‘My health, my right’. This year’s theme emphasizes that good health is the birthright of everyone. The right to access to quality health services, education and information, including clean drinking water, clean air, good nutrition, quality housing, decent working and environmental conditions and freedom, without discrimination on the basis of caste, sex, economic status or geographical location. Everyone should meet.
