In a major relief to consumers, tomatoes will be sold at subsidized prices in the Delhi-NCR region till Friday. The Department of Consumer Affairs has directed the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation (NAFED) and the National Cooperative Consumer Federation (NCCF) to immediately procure tomatoes from the mandis of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra for simultaneous distribution to major consumption centers where retail The prices recorded are maximum. The tomato stock will be distributed through retail outlets at subsidized prices to consumers in the Delhi-NCR region by Friday this week, the press release said.

The press release further states that the target centers for distribution have been identified on the basis of absolute increase in retail prices in the previous month, where current prices are above the national average. Tomato prices have increased across the country in the recent past, which is having a huge impact on the household budget of the consumers. Sudden spikes in prices often occur due to temporary disruptions in the supply chain and crop damage due to adverse weather conditions.

Will tomato prices come down soon?

The supply of tomatoes to Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh markets is mostly from Maharashtra, especially Satara, Narayangaon and Nashik, which is expected till the end of this month. Most of the arrivals in Delhi-NCR are from Himachal Pradesh, some from Kolar in Karnataka. The new crop is expected to arrive soon from Nashik district. Additionally, additional supplies are expected from Narayangaon and Aurangabad regions in August.
