Dubai: Iranian police say 110 suspects have been arrested in connection with the alleged poisoning of thousands of girls in schools across the country. Police spokesman General Saeed Muntazir Al Mehdi has given this information by issuing a statement in the Iranian media. He also said police had seized thousands of bomb-laden toys, suggesting some of the attacks may have been pranks.
Hundreds of female students remain hospitalised, according to local media reports and rights groups. Iranian officials acknowledged the incidents in recent weeks, but did not provide details on who may have been behind them or whether any chemicals were used. Authorities said more than 50 schools in 21 of Iran’s 30 provinces were attacked since November.
Iran clamped down on free media and arrested scores of journalists after anti-government protests swept across the country in September last year. Journalists and correspondents who were covering the incidents of poisoning of girl students were also attacked. The authorities also give very little information about what is happening.
