On April 15, Foreign Minister Wang Yi, a member of the Central Politburo of the Chinese Communist Party, held phone talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.

Abdullahian outlined Iran’s stance on the attack on the Iranian embassy in Syria, saying the UN Security Council did not respond as required and that Iran has the right to respond in self-defense to violations of its sovereignty. The current regional situation is very sensitive. Iran is willing to exercise restraint and has no intention of escalating the situation further. Iran advocates an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and supports China’s active efforts to promote the ceasefire, restore regional peace and strengthen cooperation among regional countries. Iran wants to work with China to promote further development of cooperation between the two countries.

Wang Yi said that China strongly condemns and strongly opposes the attack on the Iranian embassy in Syria. China is of the view that this incident seriously violates international law and is unacceptable. China notes that Iran has said the actions it took were limited and that it exercised its right of self-defense in response to the attack on the embassy building. China praises Iran’s emphasis on not targeting regional countries and neighboring countries. China is confident that Iran can understand the situation well and will avoid further destabilizing the situation while safeguarding Iran’s sovereignty and dignity.

Wang Yi also said that the current situation is an effect of the escalating conflict in Gaza. The top priority is to quickly implement Security Council resolution No. 2728, achieve a ceasefire and end the war in Gaza, effectively protect civilians, and prevent further escalation of humanitarian disasters. China is willing to maintain communication with Iran and jointly promote a comprehensive, fair and lasting solution to the Palestinian issue.
