Cairo. At least 14 people have died in the last three days of violence in Sudan’s Darfur region. There has been unrest in this area for a long time. Clashes erupted in West Darfur province on Sunday after Arab gunmen shot dead a businessman in the remote town of Fur Baranga, local activist Adam Haroon said on Tuesday. Adam Riegel, a spokesman for a local organization that helps the refugee camp in Darfur, said the killing of the trader was followed by clashes between Arab and African tribal groups and looting. Haroon said the violence continued on Tuesday and the death toll could rise. The governor of West Darfur declared a two-week state of emergency on Monday and ordered a nightly curfew across the state.
Earlier, at least five people were killed in clashes in West Darfur in late March. More than 170 people had lost their lives in violence in Blue Nile province in October last year. Sudan is in anarchy only after the military coup led by General Abdel-Fateh Burhan in 2021. The United Nations on Tuesday expressed deep concern after a video surfaced on social media of a man calling for the assassination of UN Special Representative for Sudan Volker Perthes.
