Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankan Navy has arrested 15 Indian fishermen on board two fishing vessels for allegedly fishing by entering Sri Lankan waters. This was informed on Sunday in an official statement. The Navy and Coast Guard launched a special operation on the night of July 8 to chase away Indian vessels engaged in illegal fishing off Sri Lanka, the Sri Lankan Navy said in a statement. The statement said that 15 Indian nationals have been arrested in the operation carried out on Delft Island in Jaffna.
It said the arrested fishermen and the fishing vessels seized from them have been brought to Kankesanthurai port and handed over to Malady Fisheries Inspectorate for further legal proceedings. The Sri Lankan Navy last month arrested 22 fishermen from Tamil Nadu on charges of illegal fishing. So far in 2023, the Sri Lankan Navy has seized 12 Indian fishing vessels and arrested 74 Indian fishermen in its waters this year, the statement said. All the fishermen were handed over to the Sri Lankan authorities for legal action. Illegal fishing by Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan waters has been a persistent problem despite several high-level talks between India and Sri Lanka.
