15 killed, 40 injured in two earthquakes of 6.3 magnitude in western Afghanistan

At least 15 people were killed and about 40 others were injured in two 6.3-magnitude earthquakes in Afghanistan’s Herat province. The National Disaster Authority of Afghanistan gave this information. National Disaster Authority spokesman Mohammad Abdullah Jan said that four villages in Jenda Jan district in Herat were most damaged by the earthquake and tremors. He said that dozens of houses have been damaged. The US Geological Survey reported that there were tremors of 6.3 magnitude. The epicenter of the earthquake was 40 kilometers north-west of Herat city. Later also there was a shock of 5.5 magnitude. A map posted on the survey’s website indicates seven earthquakes in the region.
“People have come out of their homes,” said Abdul Samadi, a resident of Herat city. Homes, offices and shops are all empty. There is a possibility of more aftershocks.” Samadi said, “My family and I were inside our house. I felt an earthquake.” Samadi said his family started making noise and ran out and are afraid to go back inside. Due to telephone lines being down, it is difficult to get accurate details from the affected areas. Videos surfaced on social media showed hundreds of people on the streets outside their homes and offices in Herat city. Herat province borders Iran. The earthquake was also felt in nearby Farah and Badghis provinces, according to local media reports.
Taliban-appointed Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Abdul Ghani Baradar expressed his condolences to those killed and injured in the earthquake in Herat and Badghis. In June 2022, a powerful earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan, razing many houses to the ground. The earthquake was Afghanistan’s worst in two decades, killing at least 1,000 and injuring about 1,500.
