18 farmers arrested in France

Paris: French police arrested 18 farmers protesting near the Rangis market on the outskirts of Paris, who had been warned by the government to stay away from protesting, and confiscated their tractors. French media gave this information on Wednesday.

The Europe 1 broadcaster said the farmers were arrested for disrupting traffic in the area and their equipment confiscated. They were reportedly heading towards Rangis, Europe’s largest food market, spread over seven kilometers south of Paris.

French farmers angry at unfair competition from rivals said they would bring heavy machinery to Paris this week to target the food market. On Sunday, French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin described the planned blockade of Rangis and airports as a red line for the government and warned that police would use armored vehicles and helicopters to protect them.

Earlier in the day, Mr Darmanin said the number of farmers protesting across the country against the government’s agricultural policies had risen to about 10,000. In recent weeks, farmers in France have been protesting by blocking highways and dumping manure and garbage in front of government buildings in the country. Farmers are demanding recognition of the importance of their profession and condemning the government’s agricultural policies, which they say make them non-competitive.

French farmers are particularly protesting against restrictive measures to protect the environment, including restrictions on imports of agricultural products, restrictions on water use for irrigation, increased diesel fuel prices, and increasing financial burdens.
