Bogota: At least 18 people were killed and several injured in a powerful landslide in Colombia on Friday. The government of Choco department gave this information on Saturday.
Colombia’s Vice President Francia Márquez, citing preliminary reports, said the landslide occurred on a road between Quibdo, the capital of Chocó department, and Medellin, the capital of Antioquia department, trapping several people and vehicles.
At least 35 injured people were taken to various hospitals, the National Disaster Risk Management Unit (UNGRD) said in a statement. Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro described the incident as a ‘terrible tragedy’ and asked authorities to do everything possible to assist those affected by the disaster.
The UNGRD said the Colombian Aerospace Force (FAC) used a helicopter to transport the injured and 82 rescue units were dispatched to the affected area.
Eyewitnesses at the scene told local media that before the disaster, about 50 people were taking shelter from heavy rain in a house, which was suddenly buried by a landslide.
UNGRD has said that rescue efforts are ongoing and the number of victims is expected to increase.
