The Taliban killed the suspected mastermind of a suicide attack at the Kabul airport during the US withdrawal from Afghanistan earlier this month, US officials said on Wednesday. The 26 August 2021 suicide attack targeted the Abbey Gate of Kabul Airport, where a crowd of people trying to flee the city after the Taliban took control of it.
About 170 Afghan and 13 American soldiers were killed in this attack. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby, referring to ISIS-K, said that he was a key ISIS-K official. The ISIS-K member was directly involved in the planning of operations such as the Abbey Gate and is no longer able to plan or carry out attacks.
Over the weekend the US military began notifying the families of the 13 US military personnel killed at the airport. Darrin Hoover, the father of one of the Marines killed, told the Associated Press news agency that the death of the ISIS cell member had brought some relief.
