39 journalists, media workers killed in Gaza since war started

Gaza (Uttam Hindu News): At least 39 journalists and media persons covering the Hamas-Israel conflict have been killed in violence since Hamas launched a large-scale attack against Israel on October 7. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has given this information in a report. The New York-based nonprofit began keeping records in 1992. In its updated report released on Wednesday, it claimed that October 2023 was the deadliest month for journalists globally in the last 32 years.

Of the 39 media persons killed, 34 were Palestinians, four Israelis and one Lebanese.

CPJ also said that another eight journalists were injured, three were missing and 13 others were arrested.

Meanwhile, there were also reports of multiple attacks, threats, cyber attacks, censorship and killing of family members of journalists.

CPJ further said it was investigating multiple unconfirmed reports of other journalists being killed, missing, detained, injured or threatened, and of damage to media offices and journalists’ homes.

The report quoted Sherif Mansour, CPJ’s Middle East and North Africa program coordinator, as saying, “CPJ emphasizes that journalists are civilians doing vital work in times of crisis and should not be targeted by warring parties. “

“Journalists across the region are making great sacrifices to cover this heartbreaking conflict,” he said. Those living in Gaza, in particular, have suffered and continue to suffer unprecedented losses. They face increasing threats.

“Many people have lost their colleagues, families and media outlets and have fled in search of safety with no safe shelter or exit.”

Since the start of the war, 10,569 people have been killed in Gaza, 1,400 in Israel and 150 in the West Bank.
