The London residence of Princess Sophia Duleep Singh, daughter of Maharaja Duleep Singh, the last ruler of the Sikh Empire, was on Friday honored with a ‘blue plaque’. The ‘Blue Plaque’ scheme, run by the English Heritage charity, shows respect for the importance of special buildings associated with historical figures. Sophia and her sisters were given the “Faraday House” apartment at Hampton Court Palace, south-west of London, as a favor by Queen Victoria. Princess Sofia lived in this residence for more than four decades.

“As a political reporter, I thought I knew the story of women’s suffrage fighters and then I discovered this extraordinary woman,” said Anita Anand, author of the biography Sophia: Princess, Suffragette, Revolutionary. I came to know about her and I was impressed.” Anand said that being the daughter of the last Sikh ruler and the god daughter of Queen Victoria, Sophia could have led a very comfortable life if she wanted, but she chose a difficult path. The author noted that Princess Sophia had fought for women’s suffrage.
