China engaged in increasing influence
Experts say that when it comes to influencing the Global South, China seems to have an edge. China’s influence was felt in March when two enemies Saudi Arabia and Iran reconciled. The two countries have come together because of China’s mediation. At the same time, China is beginning to play an important role in the Russia-Ukraine war. Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Russia gives some similar indications. China is a country that has used developing countries for a long time with the aim of strengthening its influence.
Economies collapsed due to Chinese debt
Jinping’s dream project Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has also increased China’s stature. Under this project, China has provided huge financial assistance for the development of infrastructure in Asia and Africa. Due to this BRI, the economy of some African countries including Sri Lanka has sunk due to Chinese debt. In the countries which are in BRI, due to Kovid-19, many projects have been derailed. India can directly benefit from these circumstances.
India ready to take on China
India’s economy is now getting stronger and experts consider it more qualified than China to lead the Global South. India is presiding over the G-20 this year. India had organized the Voice of Global South Summit before the recent Raisina Dialogue. India had invited 120 countries for this but China was not invited. According to an Indian official, China was not invited because as the head of the G-20, India’s priority was to listen to the voices of other developing countries. Experts believe that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government are set to compete with China to become the leader of the Global South.
India’s impact will be deep!
India’s National Security Advisor (NSA) Shivshankar Menon believes that China has increased the debt problems of developing countries. While the West is mired in a war in Ukraine. In such a situation, now is the right time for India to take the lead in tackling global challenges. India is an important member of the Quad, an organization comprising Japan, America and Australia. India also has good relations with Europe. A kind of cold war is going on with China and America. This has made it difficult to mediate between the West and the developing world. If experts are to be believed, then it would be better for the world that India could deepen its influence with the developing countries.
