Earlier, Nauru’s Parliament passed a motion unanimously and all members stood up to support the “severance of diplomatic ties” with Taiwan and the restoration of diplomatic ties with China. All this shows that the decision of the Government of Nauru represents the will of its people, is consistent with Nauru’s national interests and is in line with historical trends.

Nauru’s unconditional resumption of diplomatic relations with China is an independent diplomatic decision and once again proves that the One-China principle is the universal consensus of the international community. After China and Nauru signed a joint communiqué on the resumption of diplomatic relations on January 24, the number of countries in the world that have established diplomatic relations with China has reached 183. In contrast, there are only 12 so-called “diplomatic countries” left by Taiwan authorities.

For some time now, some people in the US have deliberately distorted UN Resolution 2758. He claimed that the resolution did not include the issue of Taiwan’s representation, and was making an excuse to fight for a so-called “international space” for Taiwan. Indeed, UN Resolution 2758 clearly states that all rights of the People’s Republic of China will be restored and Taiwan’s illegal representatives will be immediately expelled. This resolution completely resolved the issue of representation of all of China, including Taiwan, in the United Nations politically, legally and procedurally.

The Nauru government explained in the statement that in accordance with UN Resolution 2758, it recognizes that the Government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China, and that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China. This fully demonstrates that UN General Assembly Resolution 2758, which affirms the One-China principle, is an international legal principle and has no room for misinterpretation.

Since Taiwan’s Democratic Progressive Party came to power in 2016, 10 countries have “severed diplomatic ties” with Taiwanese authorities. In a recent interview with Reuters, Tuvalu’s finance minister explained that Tuvalu is expected to review its so-called “diplomatic relations” with Taiwan.

In recent years, with China’s help, the infrastructure of Pacific island countries such as Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands has improved, and economic growth and employment have also improved. After the resumption of diplomatic relations between China and Nauru, China will adhere to the policy of “four full respects” and carry out exchanges and cooperation with Nauru in various fields.

It is in the long-term interests of the people of Nauru to resume diplomatic relations with China. Nauru is a small country with a single economic structure. It is mainly dependent on phosphate exports, issuing fishing licenses, and exporting tropical fruits, and is highly dependent on international cooperation. The people of Nauru hope that cooperation with China can help them develop their economy and improve the livelihoods of their people.
